Here are a few ideas for mounting.
Keep in mind that when mounted on a pole or other elevated position, the image plane (radials) should also be elevated.
In the installation below, a ground strap should go from the top of the mount to the taillight area. That makes an image path more direct and more efficient. Rather than the image path having to go to the frame and back up. One could remove the tailight assembly and attach a ground strap without drilling holes in visible area.
This mount could be a little higher for better results. He wanted to be able to remove whip and enter garage. 
On this van, antenna lays down when hatch opened. Ground straps are attached on both sides of hatch to rest of vehicle.

Ground strap could or should go to taillight area on this off road vehicle installation to make a better image path. 
Notice whip is bent over to keep below legal height.
This Suburban could also use a ground strap to the taillight area for improved image path.
